Tips for Beleaguered BossesAll things considered, it's tough to be a boss today: A boss is expected to do lots more with lots less, talented workers are harder to find and keep, and the legal climate is more confusing and treacherous than ever. And with millions of baby boomers hitting retirement, these challenges will only be magnified in the years ahead when there will be 32 million fewer workers. In The Boss's Survival Guide (McGraw-Hill, July 2001), authors Bob Rosner, Allan Halcrow and Alan Levins provide bosses with strategies they'll need to not only survive at work, but thrive. The book identifies more than 60 of the most vexing problems that bosses struggle with on a daily basis, such as how to let people go fairly and legally, and how to keep employees motivated. It also has two "Top 10" lists: the top 10 ways to stay out of jail and the top 10 ways to keep the best people. Rosner is the creator of the internationally syndicated newspaper column "Working Wounded" and a frequent contributor to The Costco Connection, Halcrow is the former editor-in-chief of Workforce magazine and Levins is a senior partner with Littler Mendelson, the country's largest employer law firm. The Boss's Survival Guide uses amusing metaphors and real-world
examples to give busy bosses a quick snapshot of each issue and the
actions they can take to resolve it. The book has its own Web site,
RentensionEvangelist.com,
where bosses can share tips and strategies with their peers.
